The Treasury, also known as Al Khazna, is a magnificent façade situated in Petra, Jordan. It is accessed through the narrow siq and stands at a towering height of almost 40 meters. The intricate decorations on the Treasury include Corinthian capitals, friezes, figures, and other ornate details. The top of the Treasury is adorned with a funerary urn that has local legends claiming it conceals a pharaoh’s treasure, although in reality, it was constructed as a memorial for royalty. The Treasury consists of two floors, with a width of 25.30 meters and a height of 39.1 meters.

The original purpose of the Treasury is still a mystery, and various hypotheses have been proposed. Some archaeologists suggest it may have been a temple, while others believe it was used as a place to store documents. Recent excavations have uncovered a graveyard beneath the Treasury, which suggests that it may have been used for burials as well.

The Treasury-Al Khazna comprises three chambers, including a middle chamber with one on either side. The facade is an exceptional example of Nabataean engineering genius, with detailed carvings and intricate designs. The Treasury is a significant landmark in Petra and is an excellent representation of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage.
