Overview

Embark on a captivating journey through Jordan and Saudi Arabia, where history and stunning landscapes converge. This unique and private expedition traces the ancient trade and pilgrim routes from Amman to Jeddah. By combining these two fascinating destinations, you have the opportunity to rediscover the ‘lost’ cities of the Nabataean empire, such as Petra and Madain Saleh. Follow the historic overland ‘Syrian’ pilgrimage route to the revered city of Medina, known as the Shami Darb al-Hajj, and retrace the footsteps of Moses from the Red Sea through the wilderness of Midian to Mount Nebo.

Amidst thrilling desert escapades in Wadi Rum and Al Ula, explore sites associated with T.E. Lawrence and the Arab Revolt (1916 to 1918), including abandoned trains rusting in the desert along the former Hijaz Railway. Additional scenic wonders await, such as the awe-inspiring towering gorges of Wadi Tayyib Al Ism and Wadi Al Disah, as well as the dramatic canyons of the Dancing Mountains and the narrow, deep blue Gulf of Aqaba—a potential crossing point during Moses’ Exodus from Egypt.

The culmination of the Jordan & Saudi Arabia tour takes place at the Red Sea in Jeddah, where you’ll embark on a walking tour through the narrow lanes of Al Balad, a World Heritage site and one of the most enchanting old towns in the Middle East.

Itinerary

DAY 01 AMMAN QUEEN ALIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - Amman

Arrive Amman International Airport, Jordan. Meet and private transfer to your hotel.

DAY 02 Amman & Jerash

Meet your English speaking Jordanian chauffeur and set off on an orientation of the Jordanian capital Amman, then drive Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. Jerash, which is also called the ‘City of 1,000 Columns’, was visited by Roman Emperor Hadrian in 129AD. Its stunning remains are the equal of Ephesus in Turkey and are prized by UNESCO as an ‘ancient meeting place of East and West’.

DAY 03 Mt. Nebo, Madaba, Kerak, arrive Petra

Journey south along the ancient trade route known as the King’s Highway. First stop will be Mt. Nebo, from where Moses first saw the Promised Land. After a typical Jordanian lunch in the Ottoman town of Madaba your journey continues to Kerak where you’ll visit the huge Crusader and Mamluk castle, then drive onto Petra.

DAY 04 Petra

A full day to discover the rock-hewn ruins of ancient Petra – Jordan’s foremost tourist attraction. Once the capital of the Nabataean Arabs who controlled the lucrative trade routes between Arabia and the Mediterranean coast, Petra or ‘Rekem’ as it was called by the Nabataeans, was ‘lost’ to the outside world for a thousand years until its rediscovery in 1812. The site is approached through a hairline crack in the mountain known as the Siq, then on emerging into the ancient city, you are greeted by the breath-taking sight of the vestiges of long forgotten kings and once a fabulously wealthy empire - a spectacle that is unequalled in the Middle East.

DAY 05 Little Petra, arrive Wadi Rum

Visit the minor Nabataean site of Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) this morning, then drive to the stunning desert valley of Wadi Rum. On arrival, set-off on a 4WD jeep safari (90 minutes) through the desert. Wadi Rum was described by T.E Lawrence as ‘vast, echoing and God-like’ and is sometimes likened to the surface of the moon. This evening enjoy a typical Bedouin meal and overnight under in a futuristic Martian Dome at your scenically located tented camp.

DAY 06 Wadi Tayyib Al Ism, Midian, arrive Tabuk

Cross into Saudi Arabia and drive through the ancient land of Midian to reach to the spectacular gorge of Wadi Tayyib Al Ism (Valley of Moses) where you’ll be able to enjoy a short hike and a picnic lunch. The scenic journey continues to the ‘Springs of Moses’ at Magna and Al Bada where you’ll see the tombs of ancient Midian (known locally as Mughair Shoaib) before driving east to Tabuk.

DAY 07 Wadi Al Disah, arrive Al Ula

Wadi Al Disah, arrive Al Ula Leaving Tabuk behind you, drive south to Wadi Al Disah (Valley of the Palm Trees) – a place of spectacular natural beauty. The Al Disah Valley extends for some 15km and is framed by giant columns of rock and perpendicular smooth cliffs that rise high above the lush vegetation, water pools and palm trees. This beautiful spot for a hiking and off-roading also contains several archaeological sites that include a Nabataean tomb. After an al fresco picnic lunch you’ll drive on to Al Ula – the location of your desert camp.

DAY 08 Al Ula & Hegra

An hour’s walk in the cool morning air along the Al-Fil trail will bring you to Elephant Rock, an instantly recognisable 52-metre high sandstone monolith. Then, drive on to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Madain Saleh where you’ll visit the old Hijaz railway station and explore the magnificent rock-hewn tombs of the ‘second Petra’. Saudi Arabia’s premier tourist site was anciently known as Hegra or Al-Hijr, and was built by the Nabataean Arabs to protect their lucrative trade route with south Arabia. These fabulously situated tombs had been ‘lost’ to the world until their ‘rediscovery’ in 1876. After lunch on a date farm the day concludes with a thrilling 4WD safari through the fabulous Madakhil rocks.

DAY 09 Hijaz railway, arrive Medina

Discover the old Hijaz railway as you travel south towards Medina. Built by the Ottoman Turks to control their Arabian empire, the Hijaz railway was famously attacked by irregular Arab forces during WW1 and is an evocative monument to the war in the desert. Stop at Hadiyah where a WW1 train lies picturesquely abandoned on its side amongst the sands. Then, follow the railway off-road travelling through a dramatic sandy and mountainous landscape towards Abu Na’am Station, the site of T.E Lawrence’s first raid on the Hijaz railway in March 1917. On re-joining the surfaced road continue to Al Buwayr where complete Ottoman train lies marooned. The final leg of the day’s journey will bring you to Medina.

DAY 10 Medina, arrive Jeddah

On this morning’s excursion you’ll visit the city’s Railway Museum which is entered through the grand terminus of the old Hijaz railway. Then drive past the Quba Mosque, where the Prophet first stayed in Medina after fleeing Mecca, and around the inner ring-road to Shuhada Park from where there is an overview of the central ‘Haram’ section of Medina including the minarets of the holy Masjid Al Nabawi (Prophet’s Mosque). Continue to Jabal Uhud the location of the Battle of Uhud (624 AD). This afternoon travel on the High Speed Haramain train to Jeddah on the Red Sea coast.
Note: Please be aware that the central 'Haram' area of Medina is closed to non-Muslims.

DAY 11 Jeddah

Jeddah is known as the ‘Bride of the Red Sea’ and for centuries has been the port for nearby Mecca. Late this morning, meet your guide and drive along Jeddah’s beautiful manicured modern seafront Corniche to the ‘floating Mosque’. After a late lunch with a view of the Red Sea, the new city is juxtaposed with the old as you walk through Mecca Gate and enter Jeddah’s UNESCO World Heritage listed old quarter of Al Balad. On arrival, discover the lively souqs and multi-story houses built of coral stone with their distinctive ‘roshan’ wooden windows that comprise one of the finest old towns in the Middle East.

DAY 12 Farewell to Saudi Arabia

Today a private transfer will bring to Jeddah International Airport where you will check-in for your onward flight. Farewell to Saudi Arabia!
