Ad Deir Trail in Petra

The Ad Deir Trail in Petra is one of the most rewarding hiking routes in Petra, leading visitors from the end of the Main Trail to the spectacular Ad Deir (The Monastery). The route combines ancient Nabataean architecture, rock-carved monuments, historic religious sites, and panoramic views over the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The trail continues beyond the main archaeological area of Petra and becomes more challenging as you climb hundreds of ancient steps toward the Monastery. Although the hike requires a good level of fitness, the impressive scenery and historic sites along the way make it a memorable part of a visit to Petra.

Where Does the Ad Deir Trail Start?

The route begins at the end of the Main Trail, near the museum inside Petra and next to The Basin Restaurant. From this point, the trail heads northwards and gradually climbs through the mountains along an ancient stone staircase.

After a relatively short walk, you will reach the Lion Triclinium, a rock-cut monument located in a small side wadi on the left side of the trail. This is one of several archaeological features that you can see before continuing toward Ad Deir.

The route then follows a carved stairway higher into the mountains. Along the way, visitors can see a historic hermitage with chambers carved into the rock, many of which are decorated with carved crosses. These features reflect the later Christian presence in Petra and add another historical layer to the Nabataean city.

Continuing Toward Ad Deir

As you continue climbing, the trail eventually brings you closer to Ad Deir, one of Petra’s most impressive monuments. Commonly known as the Monastery, Ad Deir is a monumental rock-cut structure carved into the sandstone mountains.

The final section of the trail requires considerable effort because it involves climbing hundreds of steps. The route is more demanding than the earlier sections of Petra, particularly during hot weather, so visitors should allow enough time and carry sufficient drinking water.

Once you reach the top, the effort is rewarded by the impressive façade of Ad Deir and panoramic views across the surrounding landscape.

Starting the Trail from Qasr Al Bint

Another way to describe this section of the route is from Qasr Al Bint, one of the major monuments in Petra. After visiting Qasr Al Bint, you can take a break at one of the restaurants located near the temple before continuing toward Ad Deir.

From here, the trail becomes noticeably more challenging. The route climbs steeply through a long series of ancient steps before reaching the Monastery. Travelers who are comfortable with hiking can complete the climb independently, while those who prefer additional support can hire a local guide.

A guide can also provide historical information about the monuments and rock-carved sites along the route, making the walk more informative as well as easier to navigate.

How Difficult Is the Ad Deir Trail?

The Ad Deir Trail is considered a challenging hike compared with the easier walking routes through Petra. The main difficulty comes from the large number of stone steps and the continuous uphill climb toward the Monastery.

You do not necessarily need to be an experienced hiker, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. The difficulty can also increase significantly during the warmer months, especially around midday.

For a more comfortable experience:

  • Start your hike early in the day.
  • Wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes.
  • Carry enough water.
  • Take regular breaks during the climb.
  • Avoid rushing, particularly on the steeper sections.
  • Consider hiring a local guide if you are unfamiliar with the route or want to learn more about Petra’s history.

What Can You See Along the Ad Deir Trail?

One of the highlights of this route is that the journey itself is part of the experience. Instead of leading directly to the Monastery, the trail passes several archaeological and historical features.

Depending on your route, you can see the Lion Triclinium, rock-cut chambers, carved crosses, ancient stairways, and dramatic sandstone formations. The changing landscape also provides excellent views of the mountains and valleys surrounding Petra.

The combination of natural scenery and ancient architecture makes the Ad Deir route one of the most distinctive hiking experiences in Petra.

Reaching Ad Deir

After completing the long climb, you finally arrive at Ad Deir, the Monastery. The monument is one of the largest and most recognizable structures in Petra and is dramatically positioned against the surrounding sandstone mountains.

Take some time to appreciate the façade and explore the viewpoints around the monument. The elevated location provides a different perspective of Petra and the surrounding landscape compared with the lower sections of the archaeological site.

For many visitors, reaching Ad Deir is one of the highlights of their Petra hiking experience.

Is the Ad Deir Trail Worth It?

For travelers who enjoy walking, history, and spectacular landscapes, the Ad Deir Trail is an important part of visiting Petra. The climb can be physically demanding, but it offers much more than simply reaching the Monastery. Along the way, you encounter ancient stairways, rock-cut chambers, archaeological remains, and changing mountain scenery.

Planning your visit properly, starting early, taking breaks, and allowing enough time for the hike can make the experience much more enjoyable.
