About This Tour

If you want to experience the true essence of Turkey in a single journey, combining Istanbul and Cappadocia is the perfect choice. In just a few days, you can explore imperial palaces, Byzantine landmarks, and vibrant bazaars—then wake up among fairy chimneys and surreal valleys shaped by nature over millions of years.

This itinerary is ideal for travelers who want history, culture, landscapes, and unforgettable experiences in one seamless trip. Istanbul offers the grandeur of empires; Cappadocia delivers dreamlike scenery and adventure. Together, they create one of the most balanced and rewarding travel routes in Turkey.

Why Combine Istanbul and Cappadocia?

Turkey welcomed over 49 million international visitors in 2023 (Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism), and these two destinations consistently rank among the most visited.

Here’s why the combination works perfectly:

  • Istanbul: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Bosphorus cruise, Grand Bazaar.
  • Cappadocia: Goreme Open-Air Museum, underground cities, fairy chimneys, sunrise hot air balloons.
  • Short domestic flights (around 1 hour) make the connection easy and time-efficient.

From our experience organizing Turkey tours, travelers who combine both destinations say it feels like visiting two different worlds in one vacation.

What to Expect from the Experience

  1. Imperial Istanbul
Walk through centuries of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman history. Imagine standing inside Topkapi Palace where sultans once ruled three continents. End your day cruising between Europe and Asia on the Bosphorus.
  2. Magical Cappadocia
Cappadocia’s volcanic landscape looks almost unreal. One of our recent guests described watching the sunrise from a hot air balloon as “floating through a painting.” The underground cities—some reaching 8 levels deep—reveal how ancient civilizations once lived beneath the earth.

For travelers wanting a classic introduction to Istanbul and its surroundings, our Istanbul Classic tour brings these highlights to life with expert guidance and seamless logistics.

Day 5: South Cappadocia (Green Tour) / Fly to Istanbul

You will be collected from your hotel for a full day of tours in South Cappadocia.

Starting your day with a visit to Kizilcukur, an isolated valley sitting behind Urgup, you will see incredible rock formations, including the very famous rock-carved churches. Within this area, there are countless tracks connecting the churches to small villages and towns, winding through vineyards and gardens like spiders’ webs. It is common to come across villagers offering locally grown produce such as grapes, apples, and apricots with a warm welcome.

Next, we move on to Cavusin, one of the oldest settlements in the area, situated 2 km from Goreme on what is known as the Goreme–Avanos Road. In Cavusin sits the iconic St. John the Baptist Church (closed for renovations), offering panoramic views across the village. The stunning paintings within the church date back to the 5th century, making it the oldest church in the region. Unusually for Cappadocia, the church had a large courtyard, which was sadly eroded over time.

Moving on, we will then explore the absolute treasure known as the Underground City. This is only one of forty found in Cappadocia, and it is hard to imagine the work that went into the construction of its eight floors. Not all of the floors are open to the public.

Finally, we visit Pigeon House, another amazing structure featuring pigeon houses and unique rock formations.

You will then be transferred to the airport for your flight to Istanbul. Upon arrival in Istanbul, transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Istanbul.

  • Meals: Breakfast and Lunch.
